Overview

The Oberseminar “Cloud Computing, Data Management, and Data Centre Networking” covers practical content from research and development in the context of state-of-the-art data centres. The seminar trains skills essential for research and, in addition, provides insight into applied computer science.

The participation in seminars like “Cloud Computing, Data Management and Data Centre Networking” is one of the prerequisites of the PhD Programme in Computer Science (PCS) of Georg-August-Universität Göttingen. An excerpt of the respective regulation for the PhD Programme in Computer Science is listed below (see paragraph IV.).

The seminar is further open to interested students and employees with a background in computer science and related fields from the Göttingen Campus.

Learning Objectives

Each meeting will focus either on a thesis, a research topic, or a research project. In the first part, the contributor presents his or her work, progress, problems, future planning, or results. The presentation lasts 45 minutes. After that, the seminar attendees have the opportunity for discussion and sharing experience. The Oberseminar, in addition, offers the opportunity for young researchers to connect with other researchers and extend their scientific network.

Other skills like academic writing, presentation, public speaking, didactics in higher education, research methods, or software development will become part of the seminar in future semesters.

Credit prerequisites

The doctoral candidate must earn at least 21 credits which are subdivided into the following categories:

1. Research programme

   The doctoral candidate must regularly participate in the advanced seminar or research seminar offered by the scientific group [Fachgruppe] (3 Credits for each lecture held by the candidate). The doctoral candidate must participate in at least one subject-related conference by presenting a lecture or a poster (Each lecture and/or presentation counts as 3 Credits).

2. Degree programme (worth at least 3 Credits)

   The doctoral candidate must successfully attend at least one advanced course pertaining to the specialist area of the dissertation (worth at least 3 Credits).

3. Key qualifications (worth at least 9 Credits; of which at least 4 Credits for participation in supervised teaching)

   For example, participation in supervised teaching of courses within the Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree Programmes in Informatics in consultation with the academic advisor. For example, participation in Summer Schools in consultation with the academic advisor. For example, public speaking seminars or similar courses in consultation with the academic advisor.
