The FAIR Data Publisher is being developed as part of the MISSION KI initiative—a national initiative for artificial intelligence and data economy. MISSION KI is funded by the former Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport until the end of 2025 and implemented by acatech—the German Academy of Science and Engineering. As the main contractor, the GWDG is leading the FAIR Data Publisher project, with which we aim to promote the systematic and efficient exchange of data between different data sources and data spaces. Together with 17 renowned partners, we are researching and developing technologies related to the concept of FAIR Digital Objects (FDO). The goal is to provide an open and modular service architecture and software tools that enable organizations to manage and provide their data according to the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable).

Project Goals

  • Development of a modular FDO service architecture that enables the publication, management, and linking of FAIR Digital Objects.
  • Provision of a software tool that enables organizations such as companies, research institutions, and public authorities to convert unstructured data into structured, machine-readable FDOs.
  • Practical validation of the new infrastructure based on specific use cases from various specialist domains.
  • Evaluation of the developed architectures and tools under business conditions.
  • Development of recommendations for action for the Europe-wide and cross-sector use of FDOs.
  • Promotion of standardization and regulatory certainty (especially with regard to the EU Data Act and Data Governance Act).
  • Publication of all project results and software as open source so that FDOs can be used across the board in administration, research, and business in the future, paving the way for innovative AI solutions.

GWDG’s Role in the project

AAs consortium leader, the GWDG is responsible for the overall coordination and management of the FAIR Data Publisher project on behalf of the client. We are leading the development of the FDO service architecture and contributing our many years of expertise in the field of scientific data management. Our goal is to work with our project partners to create a sustainable, interoperable, and FAIR-oriented infrastructure that enables secure, transparent, and efficient data exchange across organizational and system boundaries. The GWDG acts as the central interface between research, industry, and public administration, ensuring that the solutions developed meet high technological and regulatory requirements.
