Recently, there have been reports in the news about possible hacker attacks on universities and clinics. In principle, the University of Göttingen and University Medical Center Göttingen (UMG) as well as the GWDG are also at risk. However, we have taken appropriate precautions to deal with the current threats. Criminal actions in the Internet become even more sophisticated. Times are mostly gone, when virus-infested e-mails were written in bad English or German. Professional criminals are sending e-mails with correct spelling and syntax. They are sending e-mails with faked e-mails addresses as senders and are pretending, that the e-mail was send from a known person. Fake sender address are not very new, but actually even more cunning forgeries are seen, where criminals pretend to respond to e-mails, which were really send by the pretended sender previously.
More….After the hacker attack on politicians and other prominent people in early January has dominated the headlines, the media now report on a huge password collection for about 773 million online accounts available in the Internet. To give orientation help to its users, the GWDG has presented its view on the discovered worldwide data leak “Collection #1” in form of a FAQ collection, which is intended to answer the most important questions on the topic.
